What rules are there for adoption in Rhode Island?

There are many children who need good homes in the United States. Each state has its own laws, but all suggest that parents consider adoption if they're looking to grow their families. Adoption is a wonderful way to have a child and help a child in need.

State laws govern how an adoption works, so it's important to know how your state approaches adoption before you start the process. In Rhode Island, anyone can be adopted. Those age 14 or older need to provide their consent to be adopted, whereas those under 14 may be adopted without their consent.

Rhode Island requires all potential adoptive parents to have a home study. A home study can be waived in some circumstances if the waiver is for a good cause. The purpose of the home study is to learn more about the family and household. There is information needed on the parents' reasons for adoption and their backgrounds. The state will be interested in safety concerns and past marriages as well as other factors.

Anyone in Rhode Island can adopt as long as the person being adopted is younger than him or her. A spouse must agree to an adoption if the petitioner is married, but the spouse may not have a choice in the matter if the child's best interest is to go with the petitioner. Most adoptions require the prospective parents to live in state for at least six months prior to the adoption. If you're ready to move forward, it's worth discussing your case with your attorney to prepare to bring home a child.
