Man crashes into sea, faces DUI allegations

When you decide to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and are tired, distracted or intoxicated, you probably already know it's a bad idea. You may think you're feeling well enough to get home safely, but what if you aren't? If you aren't, you put yourself at risk of being arrested or causing a crash.

When that happens, you face serious penalties alongside potential civil claims. Take for example this case from Feb. 24.

The news reports that a man from Massachusetts was driving when he drove his pickup truck over a local seawall in Rhode Island. The vehicle went into the water and had to be towed from the scene. Fortunately, the driver was saved and treated for only minor injuries at a local hospital. The 42-year-old man was later charged with a DUI, though, it is not clear if a blood or breath test was taken to obtain clear evidence against him.

So far, the man has not spoken out about the incident, but in cases like this, it's hard to say what could have caused the crash. Even if someone was slightly intoxicated, they could have been dealing with a medical emergency, vehicular malfunction or other problem that caused a collision. While it's easy to assume intoxication played a role in unusual crashes, it's important to make sure that the prosecution has actual proof of intoxication before you go to court. Your attorney can help you make sure you understand what charges you're facing and if the prosecution has the evidence needed to get a conviction.
