What are 3 tips for safer winter motorcycle riding?

It's the winter, and with winter comes a more difficult riding season for motorcyclists. Despite this, many still go out to ride.

There are some things you should know if you plan to ride in bad weather. The cold, snow and ice are all risks to you, as are drivers struggling with winter conditions.

1. Wear the right clothing

First, remember to wear the right clothes. In the winter, you need to layer. Wear thermal or heated clothing under a leather exterior. Base layers help keep you dry, so your sweat doesn't become cold on the body. Additionally, by staying warm, you stay more alert.

Also, remember to wear reflective clothing. A good piece of reflective clothing can help drivers see you, especially since night comes earlier in the winter.

2. Avoid riding on windy days

There's something to be said for checking the weather before you go out. Certain conditions are more dangerous for you. Wind is one of them. Wind has the potential to literally blow you off the roads, which is not something you want to do at 60 mph.

3. Increase your spacing

Finally, remember to increase the distance between yourself and other vehicles. Drivers may misinterpret how fast you're moving or how long they have to stop, so the difference between a crash or getting home safe may be your actions. Avoid allowing anyone to get too close, and always slow down if you think someone may pull out in front of you.

These are a few tips for riding safely. Remember to stay vigilant, so you can get home safely.
