3 tips for avoiding a boating accident

What better way to spend your summer than boating at Newport? Getting on your boat, fishing, wakeboarding or just cruising with your friends are all great things to do in the beautiful weather. Before you hit the water, make sure you refresh your mind about some critical safety tips. You do not want to get into a boating accident and sustain an injury to ruin your summer!

Boating is fun, and the best way to do it is with safety in mind. Keep reading for the top three tips on preventing boating injuries, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

1. Skip the alcohol

The law strictly prohibits drinking while boating, and for good reason. Alcohol consumption is a component in a third of fatal recreational boating incidents. Heat and sun exposure will cause you to become impaired more quickly, too. Do not just do it for your own safety -- do it for your passengers as well.

2. Properly maintain your boat

Just like a car, your boat needs routine maintenance. Make sure to inspect your boat and fix any issues before taking it out on the water. A great way to ensure the safety of your boat is to get a free Vessel Safety Check (VSC).

3. Take a safety course

While it might sound boring, one of the best ways to be the safest operator of a boat is by taking a boating safety course. If you already took taken one and it has been a few years, take one again. This type of course will inform you of all the procedures to operate your vessel safely.

Now that you know these three tips, you can get out on the water and have some fun! Unfortunately, sometimes other people will be negligent and cause an accident. If you ever get into a boating accident, contact a maritime law and personal injury attorney.
