How does inadequate lighting lead to slip-and-fall accidents?

Slip-and-fall accidents are common occurrences, even when property caretakers and landlords do their best to reduce safety risks. These accidents can be very severe depending on the injury suffered by the victim, which can lead to hospitalization and even surgery. One such cause of slip-and-fall accidents is inadequate lighting. So, how does inadequate lighting lead to slip-and-fall accidents?

Inadequate lighting is one of the leading causes of slip-and-fall accidents both indoors and outdoors. When there is not enough lighting to properly light a pathway, the people using said pathway can find themselves on the ground in a matter of moments.

Slip-and-fall accidents caused by inadequate lighting can occur in the following areas:

- Indoors at work or a home

- Parking lots

- Trips over curbs

- Falls down stairs

- Trips over debris

- Falls due to uneven surfaces

- Trips in holes, cracks or crevices

- Parks (tree roots or limbs)

- Protruding concrete on sidewalks and driveways

Property owners, caretakers and landlords are responsible for making sure that their properties are properly lit at all times, especially at dusk and at night. Improper lighting can be solved with the addition of more lights, replacing dim or burned out light bulbs and replacing broken or missing light fixtures.

Improper lighting can cause varying degrees of injury, including the following:

- Broken bones

- Head trauma

- Cuts and bruises

- Sprains

- Dislocated bones

- Concussions

Victims of slip-and-fall accidents caused by inadequate lighting should seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to a property owner or landlord. The victim should not make any statements regarding the accident to the property owner or to an insurance company before speaking to a personal injury attorney.

The failure to turn on lights in an office, movie theater or house when guests are present can lead to a slip-and-fall accident. If you or a loved one has suffered a slip-and-fall accident due to inadequate lighting, seek legal help.
