Passenger of alleged drunk driver lands in hospital after crash

Driving while intoxicated can be life-threatening -- not only for the driver but also for any passengers in the vehicle. A passenger was recently sent to a Rhode Island Hospital after he suffered injuries in an accident that was caused by an alleged drunk driver. Although the driver initially claimed to have been sober, police say he later admitted to being a regular drinker and said he messed up this time.

A police report indicates that officers proceeded to an accident shortly after 9 p.m. on a recent Monday. Upon arrival, it was determined that a pickup truck had smashed into a tree. The driver was reportedly pacing back and forth, muttering to himself. A passenger who had been ejected through the windscreen was found to be conscious. He was rushed to a medical facility.

The passenger's injuries were reported to be serious, although not life threatening. Officers said the driver refused to submit to a breath test. However, he reportedly failed several field sobriety tests. He was arrested on DUI charges and transported to be evaluated at the hospital, where he apparently agreed to have blood drawn for a toxicology test.

The passenger who was the injured victim of this alleged drunk driver will now have to face unanticipated medical expenses. Regardless of his relationship with the driver, he will be entitled to pursue financial relief by filing a personal injury claim in a Rhode Island civil court, naming the driver as the defendant. After establishing negligence to the satisfaction of the court, properly documented claims for monetary compensation of financial and emotional losses will be adjudicated.
