Connecticut bus crash leaves 36 passengers injured

The state of Connecticut, along with the rest of the Northeastern U.S., has been hit hard this winter with snow, ice and frigid temperatures. As we noted in a recent blog post, there are numerous challenges associated with driving in inclement winter weather and drivers are advised to slow down and use extreme caution when road conditions are hazardous.

Connecticut residents were once again reminded of the dangers of winter driving when last week a charter bus traveling along Interstate 95 from New York City to the Mohegan Sun Casino near Montville crashed. According to news reports, the accident occurred when the 63-year-old bus driver lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to change lanes.

Snowy and slippery road conditions were believed to be a factor in causing the bus to slide into a metal barrier along the shoulder of the road. The force of the crash caused the bus to roll over. At the time of the accident, 55 passengers were aboard the bus and 36 people suffered injuries and received medical treatment at area hospitals.

Of those passengers who were injured, seven were reported to have suffered critical injuries including broken bones and internal injuries. Additionally, many other passengers suffered painful contusions and head injuries after being thrown about the bus’ cabin during the accident.

The accident remains under investigation. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the bus company involved in the accident received a satisfactory safety rating in October of last year. Additionally, this was the first accident that the bus company was reported to be involved in during the last two years.

Individuals who have suffered injuries while riding aboard a charter, school or public bus may choose to take legal action to recover compensation related to injuries, lost wages and disability.
