Accident involves DUI charges, first-time offense for the accused

An accident in East Providence, Rhode Island has led to a 34-year-old man receiving some serious DUI charges. The person that the 34-year-old hit was a 51-year-old man on a motorcycle. The 51-year-old was hospitalized as he suffered serious head injuries. The 34-year-old was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or greater. He was also charged with felony DUI. Both charges were first-time offenses for the 34-year-old.

We wrote about the extensive penalties that can affect a person after their first DUI offense last week. The 34-year-old in this story will face these consequences, and likely some more severe ones as well, as a result of this unfortunate accident. We can only hope that the 51-year-old is able to make a full recovery.

Even in cases like this, where the person accused of the crime seems to be absolutely guilty and at fault for the incident, there is still plenty of incentive for the offender to get legal help and defend his or her case. At the very least, you could minimize the potential damage of the charges against you and give yourself a chance to rebuild your life without a bunch of impediments (license suspension, fines, etc.) standing in your way.

In rare circumstances, the case may have been botched by the police. An improper investigation, improper conduct, or other mistakes could lead to a case being thrown out or charges being dropped.

Obviously, in any case there would still be the aftermath of the wreck to deal with (if your DUI case involves a wreck, that is), but defending your case even in dire circumstances is crucial for the accused person.
