What types of situations can cause slip-and-fall accidents?

Slip-and-fall lawsuits are among the most commonly pursued personal injury lawsuits throughout the United States, including in Rhode Island. There are numerous things that can cause slip-and-fall accidents to occur. Some of these are briefly detailed below.

Property owners are responsible for maintaining their properties to ensure they are safe. The law states that a property owner can be held responsible for injuries that result from unnatural accumulation of snow or ice. An example would be ice that melts and drips off of a roof and then refreezes on the ground due to a clogged drain. Business owners also have a certain duty to keep their premises safe for consumers who may be visiting their businesses.

In parking lots, it is critical that there is adequate lighting so that patrons can see where they are going. When businesses fail to provide an adequate amount of outdoor lighting and it results in someone getting injured, such as tripping over a curb and breaking a leg, they can often be held liable. This is particularly true if it can be proved that a business or property owner was aware of or should have been aware of the poor lighting and did not do anything about it.

When a public sidewalk is involved, things can get tricky. Usually, a residential homeowner cannot be held liable for injuries that occur on a public sidewalk in front of his or her home. However, when it comes to businesses, this may not always be the same. One such instance in which this may be the case is when the sidewalk is the only way for a customer to enter and leave the business.

In many cases, injuries in Rhode Island slip-and-fall accidents are so severe that they require extensive time off work and result in expensive medical bills. For that reason, many people may decide to pursue lawsuits against the companies or individuals responsible for the negligent conditions that resulted in the incidents and injuries. If successfully litigated, it may be possible to recover compensation for the harm caused.
